The Challenge
A health system is only as strong as people’s ability to use it — with dignity, and with full knowledge of what they’re entitled to receive.
No medicine, no technology, no trained provider can deliver results if people don't feel safe or respected enough to seek and stay in care — if their privacy is violated, if no one explains their diagnosis, or if they’re charged illegal fees. And many don’t know what care to expect, like the screenings pregnant women should receive at each prenatal visit. What you don't know, you can't ask for. In under-resourced systems, this gap is invisible but deadly.
What We Do
Matimba works alongside communities and health workers to break down the barriers that keep people from quality, dignified care. And we partner with Mozambique’s Ministry of Health so that patients' experiences shape national policy.

Frontline Health Justice
Rooted in communities and health facilities, our health advocates raise awareness of health rights, resolve barriers to care, and build collective power with women and marginalized groups to shape the health system. They train and mentor health workers — from doctors and nurses to pharmacy staff and receptionists — to deliver quality, dignified care.

Health System Transformation
Health advocates document every case they handle, turning patients’ experiences into real-time evidence. We work with government to turn that evidence into policy — co-drafting the country’s first strategy against illegal charges in the health sector, and playing a central role in shaping humanized childbirth standards now protecting women in 492 health facilities.

Health Justice at Scale
Without accountability and trust, even the most ambitious investments in healthcare fall short. We’re scaling our approach with civil society partners across the country through training, mentorship, and collaboration, and laying the groundwork to extend it across sub-Saharan Africa.
